Who we are

Founded in the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War, the Institute of the Adoration Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus embodies love, unity, and forgiveness in a world torn apart by division. Our founder envisioned a community where people from diverse tribes and backgrounds could live harmoniously, showcasing the living possibility of unity in diversity.

To help lay this strong foundation, the institute was blessed with its first formators from the Sisters of the Holy Family, USA: Sr. Sylvia Thibodaux, SSF, who remained with us until late 1992, and Sr. Marie Sampia, SSF.

As consecrated African women, we strive to integrate all that is good, true, and beautiful in our culture into our lives. Our religious habit uniquely reflects this commitment through modesty, elegance, and African-ness. Our deep relationship with God is nurtured through community and individual prayer, inspired by our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This spiritual foundation enables us to support one another in our various ministries and celebrate our unique gifts.

We believe in treating all people with dignity and respect, regardless of religion, class, tribe, or culture. Our communities are places of genuine hospitality, where everyone feels accepted and valued.

Our Charism: To experience, re-enact, and make people aware of the Redemptive Love of Christ through unity, peace, and reconciliation.

Our Motto: Ut Unum Sint “That they may be one” (cf. John. 17:21)

This greeting serves as a constant reminder of our identity and mission, inspiring us to live out our charism and motto in our daily lives as we do all things out of love for Christ who called us.
